I have been having thrifting luck lately. I found a play kitchen for Jonas that was $100 new and paid just $9 for it. Of course it was missing the pots and pans etc but those are easy to replace. I typically have a running list of things to keep a look out for. I like to keep it in my purse or in my phone so that I have it when I am shopping. I'm always on the look out for milk glass vases, Mother Mary planters, vintage wedding toppers, and fun fabric etc.
Mostly my list is filled with vintage items for my shop. Lately though, I am finding great non-vintage items at a fraction of the cost of buying them new.
1- I found this awesome metal crate. It was new and still had tags but has that vintage look that I love. I have been wanting one of these for a long time and eagerly snatched it up for under $10!
2- Giant Magnets for Jonas. Since he is still putting things in his mouth, the XL size of these keep things safe and he can still explore fun with magnets. I found a big bag for under $3.
3- How could I pass up these brand new hot pink slippers? They were about $7 but new they are about $20- so I gave in.
My Tips on Thrifting for non vintage-
*Condition: Make sure the item is in good condition, is it missing any parts/ buttons/ zippers? is it clean or cleanable?
*Price: be price conscience- if you don't know the price of the item new- you might want to pass it up (make sure this is really a deal).
*Is it a Good Buy? I always check myself before I head to the register and examine each of my finds. I don't want to add to useless clutter to my home because of a momentary shopping high. If it is something that I really love or has an immediate use, I will keep it in my basket- if not, it goes back to the shelf.
*Ask for a Deal! -don't be shy. I almost always ask if there is a sale or deeper discount on the items I purchase. Sometimes there are coupons that I am unaware of, a loyal shopper program- and sometimes the cashier will just give you a deal on the spot. It never hurts to ask!
*Shop Often and Go Early- I tend to go to the same stores two times a month. I am always surprised how many new things I find each time. I have learned my lesson by starting my day after lunch, stores tend to be picked bare. Get an early start for best luck.
*Donate- bring a bag of items you want to donate- new things in and clutter out. This is a good practice and will help manage bulging closets.
I can't say enough good things about thrifting. You never know what you will find. It provides adventure, a good laugh, some awesome deals and is easy on the budget. I have the most fun when I bring someone along. We end up laughing and getting giddy together when we find a treasure. Best of luck to you on your thrifting adventures! Would love to hear what you have discovered lately!
